Release the Hounds challenges the way femininity, identity and beauty is represented and perceived through a series of intimate portraits of a diverse selection of women. Stephanie O’Connor employs post production techniques, ordinarily used to hush and perfect, to accentuate facial “flaws”. The artistic, social and political goal is to upset the balance viewers have come to expect from the retouching realm. The figures become animal and creaturely, a pack of ‘hounds’ made powerful by their own imperfections.
This exhibition is presented as part of Auckland Festival of Photography.

I am a New Zealand based photographic artist, perched in Grey Lynn Auckland.
Since graduating from Elam with a BFA in 2007, I have explored the use of post-production methodologies to communicate various ideas.
