Geometry of Thought

GEOMETRY OF THOUGHT

24 July – 15 September
Boardroom and Little Gallery

Geometry of Thought presents an assemblage of artists who utilise geometric aesthetics to channel their senses, producing compelling and unique artworks that complicate the relationship between experience and reality. They examine the mathematical, organic, musical, cultural, social, and visual domains. Each using their investigations to build new worlds. The artistic process parallels the human experience of natural forces. Artists channel their ability to perceive and translate their thoughts and experiences, manifesting them in a new form as artworks. It is in this sense that artists act as conduits to the world’s forces, each particularly attuned to a specific methodology, unique to their subjectivity.

Each artist employs geometry as a language, a method through which their thoughts and ideas are translated. Geometry holds a referential and symbolic power, a way of communicating without words. Humans have become literate in this language of iconography, our world increasingly saturated by imagery and symbolism. We see shapes, lines and colours, immediately and instinctively understanding their meaning and purpose. Geometry has remained a central language and source of inspiration in art, used by abstract modernist painters to manifest the unseen and ephemeral around us, and represent the human psyche.

This exhibition’s artists all live and work in New Zealand, bringing a distinctly local and diverse perspective to the fields of geometry and subjectivity. Exhibiting artists are Roma Anderson, Gregory Bennett, Sara Hughes, Shannon Novak, Ben Robertson, Kāryn Taylor, Andre Tjaberings and Peter Trevelyan.

Geometry of Thought  has been curated from the collection by Roma Anderson, 2019 Wallace Arts Trust Summer Intern.
