Frances Rood: BIOSTRUCTURE

According to Frances Rood, BIOSTRUCTURE reflects her interest in the intersections between art and biological science.
Using scissors, scalpels and paper, she explores this territory: mapping out and manipulating what appears to be the magnification of various cellular structures – in this sculpture, the magnification of hair structure.
“By cutting away into each individual sheet of paper, what emerges is a complex
play of shadow and light – negative and positive space. As the layers multiply,
parts move together and combine in depth, complexity and fragility, the resultant
work suggests the paper-thin organic quality of a cellular scaffold.”
Long sheets of painted paper have been employed in this installation to create a structure that despite it’s fragility, has a strength too and establishes an architectural presence that invites contemplation and exploration. Like genetic blueprints unfurled, this site-specific work responds to the play of light – shadows shifting subtly as the direction of sunlight moves through the windows of the Pah Homestead.
