Essential Matter
30 May – 9 July, 2017
Curated by Summer Intern Jemma Giorza
Boardroom and Little Gallery
An interest in the ways artists explore and interact with the land provides the formative basis for this exhibition. Of specific concern is how the earth as a materiality in its raw and natural state is often overlooked and undervalued. Matter has historically been thought of as something raw, unfinished, lacking refinement and in need of shaping by the intellect. The elevation of matter and earth through the artistic process provides a platform for a range of issues to come to light. One being how the value of land in a monetary sense can rise exponentially for some while spirituality and connection with land diminishes.
This exhibition was curated by 2017 Summer Intern Jemma Giorza, and includes work by Brendan Adams, Antje Barke, Zoe Bokany, Gary Freemantle, Harry McAlpine, Tanja Nola, P.J Paterson, and Suji Park.
