EDWARDS+JOHANN: Events Growing From The Edge Of Spaces
May 29 - July 9, 2017
Photography Gallery and Master Bedroom

The exhibition EVENTS GROWING FROM THE EDGE OF SPACES is staging recent works by the artist duo EDWARDS+JOHANN.

The works On the Seam of Things – Constellations and Constellations – drawing strength reflect on our basic human condition: to connect, work, play and test the space we inhabit in order to deal with crises and to grow.

The series An Embezzlement of Sort is a dark, yet playful space of human propositions to ‘unknown’ events.

Edwards and Johann’s collaborative work interweaves drawing, painting, performative activities, video and installation with photography. A connecting thread in their visual storytelling is the use of the obsessive line drawing over an existing object as motif for the tensions and dichotomies inherent in life. The gradual process of drawing, part of the work’s becoming is a probing and mapping of new territory. Drawing acts like an obsessive caress on the photographic surface, finding form and meaning. Their images seem both inherently stable yet also subject to temporality. They present a ground in which sensitivities and questions of existence can be played out. Utilising a range of media and methods in their work, their collaborative approach is a process based research lab. Sole authorship becomes obsolete in the process of making new work and in any of their projects/exhibitions.

“Immersing ourselves elsewhere holds great significance for the way we work together. Looking for the other, gaps, the unknown – the chance encounter, the unexpected experience, poetry and/or cultural debris can provoke…and provide material for investigation. Objects become characters and characters become players. We embrace the unexpected, culturally different as a means to look at ourselves – differently again”.

This exhibition is part of the Auckland Festival of Photography.
