A Matter of Being: A contemporary identity
31 March, 2015 - 24 May, 2015
Boardroom
The concept of identity has been consistently explored by artists, many using artworks as a means to question and challenge the way in which personal and cultural identities are defined.
Race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality are among concepts that define identity, but for some it is something more indefinable, fluid and ever changing than these constructs.
A Matter of Being brings together artists from varied and distinct backgrounds and experiences in order to investigate the ideologies surrounding identity and how they have been explored in contemporary New Zealand art.
This exhibition was curated by 2015 Arts Trust Summer Intern, Bronte Perry and includes works by Shigeyuki Kihara, Victoria Edwards, Saskia Leek, and Emily Karaka.
A Matter of Being calls into question how we define our identity in this rapid and continually evolving society and through this discourse gaining a new understanding of the beauty and diversity of human nature.
