Heritage Festival Edition - Musical Tales with Mark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard
"I've lived in this town for most of my life, and I've been around, but I keep coming back. A place turns out to be much more than lines on a map, or beaches, or mirror glass, or uncertain weather. So how do we explain the streets of Auckland? They say that 'A picture paints a thousand words' – a song will do that too."
Mark Laurent is a professional musician, writer, and lifelong Aucklander. He and musician/partner Brenda Liddiard present a spell-binding program of songs, poetry and stories of a boy growing up in the big city in the 1960s-70s.
Mark and Brenda present an eclectic mix of material that can be ‘pin drop’ delicate, or sound like a full band! They sometimes pepper their sets with short bursts of poetry and stories of a road well travelled.
Mark Laurent plays the blues like his life depends on it. His guitar is just about as expressive as his vocals. It confirms the guitar hero status he earned several decades ago when his professional music career kicked off in the 1970s.
Brenda Liddiard has a voice born of true folk, protest and alt-country sentiments. Brenda has been influenced by English and American acoustic music and found her niche as a songwriter during her involvement with environmental and anti-nuclear issues in the 70’s and 80’s. Her album, Box of Memories, was a finalist in the 2013 Tui Awards for Best Folk Album.
Music at Midday returns to Pah Homestead with an hour of free live music from 12 to 1pm each Saturday.
Auckland is rich with a diverse range of creative musical talent and we celebrate this every week. Sit down in the drawing room to enjoy the live music, or peruse the galleries while you listen to the music drifting through the building.
