James Williamson, Belfast-born, had spent his youth on his father’s linen merchant sailing ship trading throughout the South Pacific. At the age of 26, he decided to set out on his own and opened a humble store on the beach of Kororareka (Russell). The year was 1840. By the 1870’s he had earned the reputation of being a self-made merchant prince. To reflect his prosperity, Williamson purchased the land upon which this large Italianate home, the Pah Homestead was built.
Classified as a Heritage 1 site, the tour explores the lives of individuals and iwi who are connected to the land surrounding the Pah Homestead, their decisions, and their impact on society today.
