This event is part of Auckland Heritage Festival 2024

Chris Priestley and The Unsung Heroes present a night of songs stories and images about New Zealand’s distant past including many Pacific references. Including tales of shipwrecks, pirates and many who crossed the ocean on their way from one gold rush to the next…

A photographic slideshow of historic images as accompaniment, with, gorgeously evocative music and words, and Elliott’s old-style radio diction, sharp timing, and dry humour all predictive of ways we have come to see ourselves. Joining Chris Priestley are Cameron Bennett, Nigel Gavin, Peter Elliott and Sonia Wilson.

Chris has written some beautiful melodies and he has a wonderful, simple, direct singing style. He has surrounded himself with some of Auckland’s finest players. The end result is the most entertaining New Zealand history lesson you’re likely to encounter this (or any) year.

Journalism is his day job – he currently produces a weekly tv current affairs programme and is director/writer of the ongoing NZ Land Wars documentaries featured on RNZ online. New Zealand colonial history is in his blood; from the Wairau Affray to the Western Front, his forebears have borne

Initially a visitor from Long Island, New York, Nigel Gavin is now a long featured player in New Zealand’s music scene, particularly in Auckland, playing 7 string guitars, banjo, mandolin, bass - indeed, almost anything with
