In The Fantastic World of Hye Rim Lee (works 2005-2010), Lee displays four major animation works. Here Lee deals with the world of virtual relationships, using sophisticated computer programs laden with sexual innuendo to provoke and condition viewer responses. Traditional photographic techniques are combined with dazzling 3D digital effects to optimise perspective, texture, and reflection. Lee's evolving computer-generated character TOKI is a female cyborg, a hybrid form of human and rabbit ('toki' in Korean) which the artist employs to explore issues of femininity, cosmetic surgery, the projection of desire, control and technological manipulation. Lee explores the tendency of contemporary culture to manipulate ideals of instinct, fantasy and sexuality.Using the medium of 3D animation, she creates a fantasy world that evokes nostalgia for childhood and explores contemporary pop culture and cyber trends between West and East, mixing ancient mythology and new contemporary myth-making. In this continuing artistic project the artist reflects on how female sexual identity is perceived and used at a global level.
