The ‘Cedar’, as it was coined, was a tavern and restaurant in New York City. By day blue collar workers resided there, by night it was famous as a hangout of many prominent Abstract Expressionist painters and beat writers.

This exhibition connects and investigates the practices and dialogue of six prominent New Zealand painters addressing ideas surrounding abstraction and taking inspiration from artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Franz Kline.

Participating artists: Philippa Blair, Frances Hansen, Adrian Jackman, Patrick Malone, Denys Watkins, Shruti Yatri.
