Stephen A'Court: Still Dancing
8 October, 2013 - 17 November, 2013
Boardroom
This exhibition celebrates the 45th anniversary of the New Zealand School of Dance in Wellington, and features Stephen A’Court’s large photographic portraits of 2012 graduates. A’Court has worked with dancers from the New Zealand School of Dance for over a decade and finds the dedication of the students inspiring:
These portraits also represent my attempts to capture something of the personalities of the individuals. On stage, dancers project emotion through their body, but it starts from within. In any case, it’s a mistake to see only the outside of people who work with their bodies for a living - in the arts or in sports or whatever - and not consider the thinking and the discipline and the liveliness inside.
The New Zealand School of Dance (NZSD) celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2012. It is one of the southern hemisphere’s leading dance conservatoires and New Zealand’s foremost training establishment for contemporary and classical dancers. Since its establishment in 1967 the school has moved from strength to strength. Approximately seventy students at any one time study full-time under the tutelage of the internationally esteemed faculty.
