Shannon Novak: Tone Connections
27 March, 2012 - 20 May, 2012
AV Gallery
Following the success of the multi-space installation One Song, Three Composers created at CentralTrak, The University of Texas at Dallas Artists Residency, Auckland based artist Shannon Novak will extend and re-imagine this work in New Zealand.
The work in Texas involved realisation of the sound network through mixed media made up of a primary exhibition space (CentralTrak) and satellite exhibition spaces (outside CentralTrak). The primary space incorporated a focal point made of three pianos and a series of works on the surrounding walls. The satellite spaces exhibited an individual work that visually linked with the works in the primary space. The result was a visually cohesive network that extended beyond the traditional walls of a single gallery.
Tone Connections will take a similar approach, creating a sound network through mixed media made up of a primary exhibition space in the AV Gallery at the Pah Homestead, inner satellite spaces (other spaces within the Pah Homestead), and outer satellite spaces (other spaces linked to the Pah Homestead).
“The installation will put forward the idea that sound is part of us, of all we experience, of all that exists”. -Novak
Novak’s work explores the interrelationships between sound, colour, form, time, space, and social context. Novak has developed large-scale public installations including work on an oversized light box in Britomart, a pyramid in Queenstown, and the Clock Tower in New Plymouth. He has also created work abroad including a site-specific installation in Denver, USA, and a cross-space installation that included gallery spaces in Australia, Italy, Belgium, Wales, Nigeria, Iceland, South Africa, USA and UAE.
