The Sea Lives Here shows the ever changing moods or the ocean at Karioitahi Beach, just outside Waiuku on the west coast one hour south of Auckland.
This huge beach is 10 km long and up to 150m wide and runs from the Waikato River toward the Manukau Harbour. It is renowned for its violent seas and extremely dangerous swimming conditions. It is a really raw coastline, but its mood is always changing.

This exhibition focuses on the beauty and the moods of the ocean and the effect that it has on the people that go down to the sea to be invigorated and refreshed by what the ocean offers. The large images are taken from the same spot high above the beach from the sand dunes that give a remarkable vantage point. Sometimes tranquil and calming and sometimes bashed by blasting winds that give a sense of power and strength. The smaller images show life on the beach and the spectacular views that are bounded by the savage seas. At a time where our environment is constantly challenged by mankind, this stretch of coastline seems safe, unchanged for many years. It is hoped that by recording the beauty of the area, that generations will grow to respect the ocean and treasure what it has to offer.
Ronald Winstone is a frequent visitor to the beach, having a cottage looking out to sea. Ronald has a love for landscape and people photography that has been built up over 50 years. He has exhibited in a number of exhibitions, had work published in a number of countries and is President of the Contemporary Photography Foundation.
