Martin Awa Clarke Langdon, Embodying the past as present, as future

Martin Awa Clarke Langdon: Embodying the past as present, as future is part of the Matariki Festival 2014 28 June - 28 July. Embodying the past as present, as future is an exhibition conceived with Matariki in mind.

A time to stop, reflect, appreciate the cycles, people and places that have shaped the present. A time to consider how the knowledge of the present and past will be an enduring presence in the future.

Recently I climbed Mt Karioi (near Raglan) with two cousins in a spur of the moment decision. It was a spiritual quest to embody our whanau’s mihi, of which the first line is “Ko Karioi te maunga” – the first marker/element of our collective identity.  We had always known our maunga from afar. This was our chance to see what lay beyond our limited sight, to experience Karioi in a more personal way. By sacrificing our time and energy we would leave a bit of ourselves there just as our tupuna had, thereby strengthening our connection.
