Mnemonic Pulse references an instrument described in Frank Herbert's 'Dune' novel, designed to imprint images upon the mind of the wearer. Unhinged from time and place, Jess Johnson’s immersive animation propels us through a first-person viewpoint into an eerie, arcane and seductive parallel universe.
Jess Johnson’s drawing and installation practice is inspired by the speculative intersections between language, science fiction, culture and technology. In her drawings she depicts complex worlds that combine densely layered patterns, objects and figures within architectural settings.
Johnson’s drawings are often displayed within constructed environments that act as physical portals into her speculative worlds. Her recent experiments of translating her drawings into animated video, has enabled her audiences to have the simulated experience of entering the hypnotic spaces depicted in her drawings.
Jess Johnson was born in 1979 in Tauranga, New Zealand. She currently lives in Melbourne.
