In the Mire is a selection of works by Gary Freemantle that represents 10 years of painting with mud and earth material.

While New Zealand has a rich tradition of landscape imagery, and many sculptors, jewellers and ceramic artists have worked creatively with its earth and stones, few New Zealand painters have explored the diverse range of colours that lie buried in the ground in certain parts of the country.

The 'Flood Mud' series began in the aftermath of the Paekakariki flood of 2003. Piles of silt that washed up on Freemantle’s doorstep became the raw material he used to make a series of paintings with. The series has continued over the years.
