Dillon Gamble: Deceased Estate (2023)

Dillon Gamble: Deceased Estate (2023)
3 November, 2023 – 18 February, 2024

Exhibition Opening: Thursday 2 November, 6-8pm
Master Bedroom Gallery

Deceased Estate (2023) invites us to “move into” a space not entirely our own; vacated family homes, mysterious rental properties, storied shared flats, or one’s first home. Here the memory of children raised, pets housed, walls repainted, and gardens nurtured still echoes. With years of experience in the property maintenance industry, the artist has “cleared out” many residential spaces for resale and re-occupation, including his own grandfather’s garage after his passing in 2018. These works speak to the precarity of an object’s value, and how legacies can persist unseen in the “stuff” we inherit as we navigate and inhabit residential spaces; dormant bulbs, leftover cans of paint, and worn garden implements.

This exhibition is supported by The Arts House Trust and Jan Warburton Charitable Trust and is in association with the Dunedin School of Art, Otago Polytechnic. Dillon Gamble is the 2023 recipient of The Arts House Trust & Jan Warburton Graduate Exhibition Scholarship.

One of the greatest hurdles for any fine arts graduate embarking on a career as a professional artist is to secure opportunities to exhibit in Auckland and/or to be represented by an Auckland commercial gallery. This Scholarship provides selected graduating students with an opportunity to exhibit at the prestigious Pah Homestead in Auckland, including a targeted introduction to the Auckland art market.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Dillon Gamble (b.1993) is a Pākehā sculptor from Ōtepoti/Dunedin. His works celebrate the stuff found in garages, basements, paddocks, sheds, and garden beds. Transforming scavenged and found materials with care, Gamble’s creations examine the material legacies of generations past with fresh eyes. A known “Jack of all Trades” in his own right, his practice highlights Aotearoa's do-it-yourself histories; stories shaped by innovations and restorations undertaken with limited means and materials.
