The Adam Portraiture Award is New Zealand's premier portraiture prize. Supported by the Adam Foundation the award highlights the power of portraiture and celebrates New Zealanders and the portrait painters who represent them.

With a first prize of $20,000 and second prize of $2,500 this biennial event attracts significant attention from artists and audiences alike. This year's international judge is Angus Trumble, Director of the National Portrait Gallery of Australia. Artworks shortlisted by him, from hundreds of entries, were exhibited at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery in Wellington and will subsequently tour the country.

The award recipients were announced at the opening ceremony on Wednesday 28 February 2018. Logan Moffat received the first prize, his winning painting ‘Elam' is now part of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery's permanent collection. Martha Mitchell was the second prize winner for her painting ‘Things to do, places to be!’ A People's Choice Award of $2,500, determined by the votes of the visiting public received during the exhibition, was presented to Justine Turnbull for ‘Reckoning’.

The award was first held in 2000 and since 2002 has been supported by renowned philanthropists Denis and Verna Adam. Since 2006, the winning entry has become part of the Gallery's permanent collection.
